Nicole

Nicole's story told by her sister Chloe

34 year old Nicole was a patient in the inpatient unit very recently having been admitted in July following her diagnosis of an Astrocytoma Grade Four tumour. After two operations followed by a course of chemotherapy had not been very successful, she decided to stop all treatment to give herself the chance to live her life with some quality.

Her sister Chloe, who together with her husband and family have been fundraising for the hospice since Nicole’s admission told us: “Unfortunately Nicole had an allergic reaction to her medication which is why she had her stay at the hospice. Before being admitted Nicole was very uncomfortable and in a lot of pain. The hospice diagnosed her with Enterocous Fuecuis Sepsis in her legs which they treated.

“She was feeling very nervous about going to the hospice but was soon made to feel welcome and describes the hospice as homely and comforting. She said how the staff were so friendly and kind to both her and her family and they made her children feel comfortable to visit and provided them with lots of fun activities to share with her”.

Chloe began fundraising when her and her family decided they wanted to give back to the hospice for the around the clock care Nicole was receiving: “I asked my husband David if he would dedicate his Virtual London Marathon to raising funds for the hospice which he has done and I personally thought there was no better way for me to raise money than doing what I love which is baking so I’ve held bake sales to bring people together with sweet treats to raise money for such a wonderful charity!”

Chloe’s final fundraising total is £2,000!

“Nicole was grateful to the nurses and doctors at the hospice for giving her time to start her recovery. Since returning home she is feeling much more comfortable and is still getting support from the hospice who have helped put carers in place as well as organised a visit from one of the hospice doctors too.

Nicole concluded: “All the funds that have been raised will never be enough to say thank you for all the care the hospice gives to the people and their families who step through their doors but it’s something to help them provide that amazing care. We were struggling to give Nicole the care she needed at home so for us the hospice has been a saving grace”.
