Matthew and Johno’s Grandad, Malcolm, was cared for by the hospice team.
“The end of life care provided to Grandad was very important for myself and the family as we could continue to see Grandad during his care and make so many special memories with him. Personally, I didn’t know much about hospice care prior to this, but I was very pleased and grateful that we could spend as much time as possible with our Grandad before we lost him, and banter with him even more about the rubbish season Chelsea were having compared to Liverpool!”
Johno described his Grandad as ‘easily one of the smartest men anyone who knew him would have met’. He loved making things from scratch with his ability to craft the most genius creations with little instruction or tools.
Matthew Nash Knight and his brother, Johno, decided to take on the challenge of the half marathon in Birmingham in November 2022 to raise money for the hospice in honour of the care Malcolm received.
Being runners by hobby, this seemed like the perfect fundraising idea. They also were joined by their mum Fay, Matthew’s partner, Georgia, and their ‘second mum’ and family friend, Angela. It was a very hilly running course through Sutton Park, surrounded by people running in an event organised for the Movember Charity.
‘It was a nice touch for us to complete our own personal fundraising surrounded by people fundraising for a cause that Grandad would have loved.
They raised an incredible total of £1,591.13 which will be used to support the Hospice@Home team.
“In raising the money we did, we hope that many other loved ones from families across the country can experience the love and care our grandad was lucky to have. No one should have to suffer alone, and in supporting this charity we hope to ensure no one ever has to. Moreover, it is so important to raise awareness of the charity in addition to supporting it with our donation, and I hope that our fundraising enabled people to reach the charity and recognise its importance with the work it does.”
“One of the main things I would love to do is to encourage and inspire people to continue to support the charity, and to do this it is so important to reinforce that any kind of fundraising is absolutely worth the time and effort. Whether you better myself and Matthew and run an ultra-marathon, hold a cake sale or even just ask friends and families for donations towards this good cause, every little helps! No matter how big or small, how much effort it requires or how long it takes, any fundraising is helping another loved one receive the care they deserve”.
