In-patient volunteers are accountable to the Matron or Nurse-in-Charge.

In patient unit duties may include:

  • making beds and stocking laundry trolleys
  • helping with personal care tasks, under supervision and with the patient’s consent
  • providing companionship and diversional activities
  • making tea/coffee for relatives
  • helping patients to complete their menus
  • serving meals and drinks to patients
  • accompanying patients in the grounds
  • escorting patients when attending appointments at the General Hospital or when discharged from the unit
  • arranging flowers and watering plants
  • shopping/ collecting prescriptions for patients
  • answering the telephone in the Nurses Station.
  • responding to call bells and informing staff of patients’ requirements
  • maintaining strict confidentiality at all times
  • attending Manual Handling training and regular up-date sessions

Ward Volunteers are required to comply with local Fire Procedures and Departmental Safety Policy, which includes maintaining the highest standards of confidentiality.
